Which is longitude and which is latitude?

Latitudes and Longitudes

The shape of the earth has been given by the photographs taken by the astronauts and the orbiting satellites. The state of the earth resembles a circle, however, the genuine estimations demonstrated that the earth is certainly not an ideal circle.

The earth is somewhat swelling at the equator and smoothed at the posts. Thus, the polar diameter of the earth is 44 km shorter than the equatorial diameter. But for all practical purposes, we consider the shape of the earth as a sphere, i.e. like a ball.

It is easy to locate a place on a flat surface with reference to another place. Since spherical objects, like the earth, neither have corners and sides nor top and bottom, it is difficult to locate a place on it. Every point on a ball is like any other point. Therefore, in order to know the location and direction of a place on the surface of the earth, we have to develop some method or technique. We have to evolve or find certain points or lines which can be used as a reference for locating places on earth.

The earth rotates on its axis, which is imaginary. The endpoints of the axis of the earth are called the Poles. The other is the South Pole.

We can divide the earth into two equal parts by and meridians on a globe is called the earth's grid or the geographic grid.

PARALLELS OR LATITUDES

We can draw a bunch of circles between the North Pole and The South Pole. These circles ought to be corresponding to the equation. These circles are called equals or lines of scope.

The distance of a spot north or south of the equator is estimated as a point. This angle is the latitude of that place. The line plan is the stuff the South Pole the North Pole and the South Pole. This line is a circle and we call it the Equator, as it divides the earth into two equal parts or hemispheres.

The piece of the earth which is towards the south of the equator is known as the Southern Half of the globe. The piece of the earth which is towards the south of the equator is known as the Southern Half of the globe. Now we have the following references for describing the location of a place on the surface of the earth: The North Pole The South Pole The Equator.
